Patient Interactions
23%Tests knowledge of patient communication, infection control, vital signs, monitoring, emergency response, and the legal-ethical foundation of practice. Approximately 23% of the ARRT Radiography exam.
Image Acquisition
22%Tests technical factor selection (kVp, mAs), the 15% rule, inverse square law, image quality (density, contrast, recorded detail, distortion), grid use, and CR/DR digital workflow. Approximately 22% of the ARRT exam.
Equipment QA
12%Tests x-ray tube anatomy, photon production, the x-ray circuit, fluoroscopy equipment, image intensifiers, and the QC tolerance schedule. Approximately 12% of the ARRT exam.
Radiation Physics
10%Tests photon production (bremsstrahlung, characteristic), photon interactions (photoelectric, Compton, coherent), and the cellular and systemic effects of ionizing radiation. Approximately 10% of the ARRT exam.
Radiation Protection
10%Tests the cardinal rules (time, distance, shielding), ALARA, occupational and public dose limits, lead apron specifications, and dosimetry practices. Approximately 10% of the ARRT exam.
Extremity
11%Tests positioning and projections for the upper and lower extremities, fingers, hand, wrist, elbow, humerus, shoulder, foot, ankle, knee, and femur. Approximately 11% of the ARRT exam.
Thorax and Abdomen
8%Tests positioning for the chest, abdomen, GI, hepatobiliary, and urinary tract, including PA chest, lateral, lordotic, decubitus, UGI, BE, and IVU. Approximately 8% of the ARRT exam.
Head, Spine, and Pelvis
7%Tests positioning for the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine, the bony thorax, the skull, paranasal sinuses, and the pelvis. Includes Caldwell, Towne, Waters, SMV, and the Scotty Dog. Approximately 7% of the ARRT exam.

Common questions
How many practice questions are on the ARRT Radiography Boards?
The ARRT Radiography Boards exam contains 200 scored questions plus 30 unscored pilot questions, for a total of 230 questions delivered over a 230-minute sitting. It is a linear (non-adaptive) computer-based test. The Radtechprepper practice bank contains 1,814 ARRT-style questions across all 4 ARRT content categories, roughly 9× the scored questions on the actual exam.
What are the 8 ARRT Radiography exam categories?
Patient Interactions and Management, Image Acquisition and Evaluation, Equipment Operation and QA, Radiation Physics and Radiobiology, Radiation Protection, Extremity Procedures, Thorax and Abdomen Procedures, and Head/Spine/Pelvis Procedures. Each category has its own scoring weight (the procedure categories combined account for ~30%, image production ~27%, patient care ~23%, safety ~20%).
Are these practice questions written in the same format as the ARRT exam?
Yes. Every question is multiple choice with 4 answer options. One option is correct; the other three are plausible distractors written to test specific knowledge gaps. Rationales explain why the correct answer is right AND why each incorrect option is wrong. This matches the ARRT exam format and the format of the boards-prep books like Lange Q&A and Mosby.
