Overview

Equipment Operation and Quality Assurance is the other half of Image Production: not what a good image looks like, but what the machinery is doing while you make it. The questions are naming, ordering, and numbers. Which part does what, what comes first in the circuit, and what tolerance a test has to fall inside.

The x-ray tube is a diode. The cathode holds the thoriated tungsten filament and focusing cup; the anode holds the tungsten target, chosen for its atomic number of 74 and a melting point around 3400 degrees C. Most rotating anodes spin at 3400 rpm, and the lead-lined housing must hold leakage radiation under 1 mGy per hour at 1 meter. The circuit splits into three sections by voltage: primary, secondary, and filament. The autotransformer selects kVp by self-induction before the step-up transformer multiplies it.

The heavily examined numbers cluster in two places. Generator ripple runs 100 percent for single phase, about 14 for three-phase six pulse, 4 for twelve pulse, and 1 for high frequency. Total filtration must reach at least 2.5 mm aluminum equivalent, assembled from 0.5 inherent, 1.0 added, and 1.0 from the collimator mirror, and the light field must agree with the radiation field within 2 percent of the SID.

Quality control is pure recall: exposure reproducibility and timer accuracy within 5 percent, linearity and kVp within 10 percent, focal spot size within 50 percent. Fluoroscopy adds its own rules: the image intensifier chain from input phosphor to photocathode to output phosphor, source-to-skin minimums of 38 cm stationary and 30 cm mobile, and a cumulative timer that sounds at 5 minutes of beam-on time.

Thermionic Emission
Heating the filament boils electrons off its surface. Filament current, about 4 to 5 amps, is what actually changes when you raise the mA station.
Line Focus Principle
The angled anode target gives every tube two focal spot sizes: a larger actual focal spot that absorbs the heat and a smaller effective focal spot projected toward the patient.
Autotransformer
The single-winding transformer that selects kVp before the voltage is stepped up. Its single tapped coil means it operates on self-induction.
Voltage Ripple
How far the voltage sags below its peak during an exposure. Single phase is 100 percent, three-phase six pulse about 14, twelve pulse about 4, and high frequency about 1.
Rectification
Converting the alternating supply to one-way current with solid-state diodes, since the tube only works cathode to anode. Full-wave rectification yields 120 pulses per second at 60 Hz.
Image Intensifier
Converts a dim x-ray pattern into a bright visible image through a fixed chain: input phosphor, photocathode, electrostatic lenses, anode, output phosphor. Brightness gain runs 5,000 to 30,000.
Exposure Linearity
Adjacent mA stations at matched mAs must produce outputs within 10 percent of each other. Reproducibility, the same settings repeated, is held to 5 percent.
Amorphous Selenium
The direct-capture photoconductor. Absorbed x-rays free charge that goes straight to the TFT array with no intermediate light step, unlike scintillator-based indirect designs.
